French President Jacques Chirac has sent a "calming letter" to European
Union (EU) leaders unsettled by the French people's rejection of the
Union's proposed constitution.
Chirac reminded the importance of France as one of the founding fathers
of the EU in his letter to the leaders of the 24 member countries. The
Paris government will continue to preserve its place within the Union
the President assured. Early this week, he called European leaders on
the phone and reiterated the French determination to stick with the EU.
Rejection of the constitution does not alter the profound and historic
place of France in the construction of Europe, said Chirac
acknowledging that he is aware of the consequences of the French
refusal. He will personally watch the administration to fulfill its
obligations before the Union. Chirac asked the leaders to take time to
better analyze the French decision.
The evaluation process that will take place at the EU summit on June
16-17 should start according to French leader. In his address following
the referendum on May 29, Chirac said he would defend the outcome in
Brussels. Reportedly, Chirac will meet German Chancellor Gerhard
Schroeder on June 10 in Germany's Blaesheim and the two leaders will
assess the negative referendum result in France. |
