Typhoid warning for Malatya

MALATYA - Turkish health officials have warned there is the possibility that there could be an outbreak of typhoid in the south eastern city of Malatya after nearly 8000 people were forced to seek treatment for acute diarrhea. According to Health Ministry director of general services Turan Buzgan, speaking on television station NTV Thursday, the outbreak was caused by coliform bacteria being present in two water depots that supplied Malatya’s main water network. It is believed that the bacteria may have found its way into the water supply as a result of leaking sewerage. Buzgan said that the affected water storage facilities were being chlorinated, adding that locals should avoid drinking tap water. However, Malatya mayor Cemal Akin told a press conference Thursday that the town’s water supply was clean and not the cause of the health scare.
