Pay per click analysis company Click Defense inc. has
files suit against Search Leader Google alleging
"Google has been negligent in monitoring fraudulent
clicks, at a loss to its advertisers and a gain to its
own bottom line". This suit is filed in the US
District Court and there's a similar one pending at
the Arkansas state court.
The suit is asking for $10 million from Google, that
the search engine leader should disclose "the true
extent of click fraud" and to reimburse advertisers
for their losses resulting from the practice.
Google's adwords are the company's only real source of
revenue. Advertisers pay a fee - anywhere from 75
cents up - every time a searcher clicks on their
"Sponsored Link". It's been suggested from within
Google that somewhere between 10 and 20 percent of the
clicks are fraudulent - targeted to waste a daily
quota or simply to add cost to a competitor's
campaign.
The main allegation is that Google hasn't made enough
effort to prevent click fraud, that it's misled its
Adwords customers, and that it hasn't done enough to
reimburse click-fraud victims. Google goes have a
procedure for refunding against fraudulent clicking
but according to critics, the protocols change too
often and the system is unfair.
"We believe this suit is without merit, and we will
defend ourselves against it vigourously," said Google
spokesman Mike Mayzel. The same position applies to
the case in Arkansas.
Interestingly enough, Click-Defensethemselves paid $3
per click for a link with Google adwords against the
key words "Click Fraud" and were victims of click
fraud themselves.
