The strike that started on Wednesday in the “Big Apple” of the United
States, New York, by subway and commuter bus employees have left
thousands of homeless in the cold on the streets.
The homeless normally seeking shelter at subway stations and tunnels
during the winter season were stranded on the street when the subway
was closed down due to the strike. According to the latest official data 4, 395 homeless live in the Big Apple; however, the real figures are reported to be way above of this number. Municipality officials are working on placing some of these homeless in shelters. New Yorkers meanwhile are trying to find a solution for their commuting problem via Internet. People are sharing their experiences through blogs and forums intent on finding the shortest way for transportation possibilities. Those who travel by car are looking for pedestrians willing to share the gas money for in exchange for transport. |
