Heavy winter conditions increasing after the earthquake that hit
Kashmir makes life conditions difficult for the earthquake victims.
UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Pakistan, Jan
Vandemoortele, who is still working to rescue thousands of earthquake
victims, said that although 8 weeks have passed after the earthquake
the situation in Pakistan is not promising. During the press conference
Vandemoortele organized in Islamabad the other day, he noted they are
trying to protect the earthquake victims from harsh winter conditions
in difficulties.
Vandemoortele emphasized the pessimism in people in the earthquake area
has become more dangerous than the weather and mountainous region
conditions.
The UN Coordinator noted the three main priorities
of the UN is to obtain safely heated tents, winter durable tents, and
materials to build better shelters for the victims. Darren Boisvert,
the United Nations official in charge of distributing shelter in the
quake zone, said 90 percent of the 420,000 tents distributed were not
suitable for winter conditions of the Himalayas. The weather has
already reached freezing temperatures in mountainous Kashmir and
Northwest boarder states. It is reported that it has snowed in some
regions and snow storms are expected in upcoming days. |
